Study Certificate, Conduct Certificate & Bonafide: What's the Difference?

22 Feb 2026 5 min read

Schools issue several short certificates that sound similar and are easily muddled: the study certificate, the conduct certificate and the bonafide certificate. A parent asks for “a certificate from the school” and the office is left guessing which one. Knowing the difference saves time for everyone — and ensures the right document goes to the right place.

The bonafide certificate

A bonafide certificate simply confirms that a named student is a genuine, currently enrolled student of the school, usually stating the class and academic year. It answers one question: “Is this person really a student here?” It is the document most often requested for opening a bank account, applying for a passport, claiming a scholarship or availing student concessions.

The study certificate

A study certificate goes a step further, certifying that a student studied at the school for a particular period — for example, from one class to another, across stated academic years. It is about the history of study, not just current enrolment. Students often need it for admission to a new institution, for age or residence verification, or to establish their academic record.

The conduct certificate

A conduct certificate (or character certificate) attests to the student's behaviour and character during their time at the school — typically a statement that their conduct was satisfactory or good. It is commonly required when joining a new school or college, where the receiving institution wants assurance about the student's record.

How they differ at a glance

  • Bonafide → “is a current student” (present enrolment).
  • Study → “studied here for this period” (academic history).
  • Conduct → “behaved well while here” (character).

One certificate can sometimes combine elements — a study certificate may note conduct, for instance — but knowing the core purpose of each prevents issuing the wrong one.

Issuing them correctly

Whichever certificate you issue, a few rules apply: spell the student's and parents' names exactly as in the admission register, state the class and period accurately, date it, and sign and seal it as the head of the institution. Always keep an office copy — a parent may return for a duplicate, and your record is the proof of what was issued.

Produce a clean certificate fast

Hand-writing certificates is slow and risks inconsistent wording. Our Study Certificate Generator produces a neat, professionally formatted certificate from the student's details — ready to print, sign and seal — so the office can respond to requests in minutes while keeping the wording consistent every time.

The simple rule

When a request comes in, ask one question: does the person need to prove current enrolment, past study, or good conduct? The answer tells you exactly which certificate to issue — and saves a second trip to the school office.

Put this into practice with our free Study Certificate Generator.
