Sishu Vatika: What Odisha's New Pre-School Class Means for Parents

28 Jan 2026 5 min read

If your child is around five years old, you have probably heard the name Sishu Vatika. Launched across Odisha's government primary schools from the 2025-26 session, it is the state's new pre-school class β€” and it represents a quiet but important shift in how young children begin their education.

What Sishu Vatika is

Sishu Vatika is a pre-school class for children in the 5–6 age group, opened in every government primary school. It sits just below Class 1 in the new structure: a year of preparation between home or Anganwadi and the start of formal schooling. The launch was marked with welcoming traditions β€” a Prabesh Utsav (entry festival) and a Khadi Chhuan ceremony where children touch chalk and write for the first time.

Why it exists

The National Education Policy 2020 treats ages three to eight as a single β€œfoundational stage,” recognising that the early years shape a child's whole learning journey. With Class 1 now starting at age six, Sishu Vatika fills the year before, so five-year-olds have a structured, joyful place to be rather than either staying home or starting formal lessons too early.

What children actually do there

Sishu Vatika is deliberately play-based, not exam-based. The emphasis is on:

  • Language and listening β€” stories, rhymes and conversation that build vocabulary.
  • Early number sense β€” counting, sorting and patterns through games.
  • Motor skills β€” drawing, scribbling and holding a chalk or pencil.
  • Social skills β€” sharing, taking turns and settling into a classroom routine.

The goal is readiness, not academics: a child who leaves Sishu Vatika comfortable with school, language and numbers will find Class 1 far easier.

How it connects to Class 1

Think of the path as a gentle staircase: Anganwadi or home, then Sishu Vatika at five, then Class 1 at six. Each step prepares the next. A child who has spent a year in Sishu Vatika arrives in Class 1 already used to sitting in a classroom, following a routine and engaging with letters and numbers.

What parents should do

If your child is five, ask your neighbourhood government primary school about Sishu Vatika admission. Bring the birth certificate and any documents the school asks for. And resist the urge to push for early Class 1 entry β€” the year in Sishu Vatika is an investment in your child's confidence, not a delay.
